The Australasian Faculty of Musculoskeletal Medicine (AFMM) is comprised of registered medical practitioners with expertise and special training in the specialist care of patients presenting with musculoskeletal or orthopaedic problems that are not catered for in existing general practice or specialist settings.
A musculoskeletal specialist has expertise in spinal pain and peripheral muscle, bone and joint problems. The musculoskeletal specialist has the ability to manage spinal problems such as neck pain; headache derived from the neck; back pain and sciatica; limb problems such as frozen shoulder, tennis elbow, housemaid's knee and hip pain; and other painful conditions of the musculoskeletal system including osteoarthritis.
A musculoskeletal specialist has the knowledge to be able to make a precise diagnosis and manage the presenting condition according to contemporary evidence, and has the scope to be able to discuss and at times implement all available treatment options including exercise, physical therapy, injection and operation.
